Who Was Paul Talking About in 2 Cor. 12:1-6?
A dear brother recently asked that question.
Here’s my two-cent answer:
Paul was referring to himself, even though he used the third-person noun. In the context, Paul was reluctantly boasting (11:16-12:10). In 12:1-5, Paul wanted to avoid exalting himself by sharing his spiritual experience of being in the "third heaven" or "paradise." Otherwise, he would have been accused of bragging by exaggerating. In 12:6, he explained why he spoke in the third person:
"For though I might desire to boast, I will not be a fool; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, lest anyone should think of me above what he sees me to be or hears from me." In other words, he didn't want to be put on a pedestal. That's an example all believers should follow. I hope that helps. It's just my two cents. 🤔
Blessings!
