The Scriptures are all About Jesus

A dear brother asked about Jesus’ words in John 5:39 - “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,”.

It simply shows that spiritual blindness is a result of not believing God's word, even when it is read. The Holy Spirit inspired ("breathed out") God's word that was written by "holy men of God" (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1.20-21).

Not believing God's word is technically accusing the Holy Spirit (including the Father and the Son) of lying.

One brother wrote, “they based their salvation on Old Testament writings,” meaning the Pharisees.

Therefore, because of their legalistic attitude, they totally missed the main Person of those writings  - Their Messiah,  who is Jesus!

Besides Jesus being a witness Himself to the truth (John 5.30), along with the Scriptures being a witness (John 5:39), He said there are three other witness to Him:

1. John the Baptist

    (John 5:32-35),

2. Jesus' works

     (John 5:36)

3. The Father (John

      5:37)

The Pharisees' unbelief and self righteous attitude, thinking that getting right with God is by works (or by human effort), kept them from getting a true understanding of God's

word and of His grace (see

2 Cor. 3:14-15). Jesus said to his disciples, "These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me" (Luke 24:44).

a. Moses is the "Torah"

b. Prophets are the

     "Nabiim"

c. Psalms are

     "Kethubim"

These words make up the acrostic, called  "TANAKH," which is the complete Old Testament.

So, Jesus was saying that if those Jews would sincerely search the Scriptures with open minds, they would believe Jesus.

Lastly, by not believing Jesus, neither did the Pharisees believe God's words through Moses either (John 4:46-47).

If a person doesn't believe the Old Testament, neither does he/she believe the New Testament. Both constitute the word of God.

Well, I'm done. There's much more that can be said.

I had to stop a few times (honey-dos) before I finished.

Blessings, my brothers!

I hope the lesson is an eye opener.
