Generational Curses
A dear brother asked me about generational curses. It’s a controversial topic and needs to be scrutinized through the lens of Scripture, as all topics should be. My answer was concise, as follows:
Many understand the words, “visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,” to refer to generational curses. However, it seems to refer to the “iniquity” of the unsaved in each generation, starting with the twelve sons of Israel on down to the Israelites at the Exodus (Ex. 20:5; 34:7; Num. 14:18; Deut. 5:9).
You are correct:
1. Individual responsibility is biblical (Ezek. 18:20).
2. Christ became both sin for us (2 Cor. 5:21) and a curse for us on the cross (Gal. 3:13).
Therefore, we are cleansed and separated (sanctified) from sin that condemned us (Rom. 8:1).
So, generational curses, however they are manifested, are rooted in sin passed down from Adam. I hope that helps.
You know me. I’m opened to disagreements because I could be overlooking something. As Proverbs 27:17 says, “Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another.”
Blessings!
