A brother texted the following:

“Morning Rev! … Recently I have been exposed to this concept of I statements, which I have learned is a mindfulness practice. It has to do with self-regulation. I am reminded of Jer 17:9, Psalms 139, Phil 4:8. I do not believe mindfulness is biblical. Your thoughts?”

My reply:

“Thanks for asking for my thoughts on this. If I correctly understand what is meant by “mindfulness practice…self-regulation,” that it is referring to a self-congratulatory or a narcissistic attitude, I agree that it is unbiblical. On the other hand, if it means what Jer. 17:9; Psalm 139:23-34; and Phil. 4:8 teach, it helps us to maintain a healthy attitude about ourselves, realizing our unworthiness but thankful to God for His grace which enables us to diligently serve Him (1 Cor. 15:10). I hope that helps. Blessings!”
